A criminal defense attorney is an important part of the legal process. They may go by different titles according to the district they’re working in, but they help defendants craft their case, go to court, and handle any sentencing or appeals. This video gives a general overview of what a criminal defense attorney does.

Criminal defense attorneys come to the aid of someone who is being investigated for a crime or has been arrested by law enforcement officials. Instead of dealing with law enforcement officials or court officials by themselves, defendants rely on the knowledge and experience of criminal defense attorneys.

Criminal defense attorneys will review the case and find any exculpatory evidence. This is evidence that clears the defendant of wrongdoing. It may be that there wasn’t probable cause for the arrest in the first place. Or it may be a contradictory finding that proves it was not the defendant who committed the act.

Criminal defense lawyers need to have expert knowledge of the US Constitution, especially the 4th Amendment which protects against unlawful search and seizure. The 5th, 6th, and 14th amendments are also important factors in a criminal attorney’s work.
